Machine Vision - Medical Strip Inspection

Mercator Robotec Inc. implemented a medical strip inspection system for a leading manufacturer of medical devices.  Due to the nature of the product, several FDA requirements pertaining to software design and development had to be met.  The machine produced parts at a very high speed, and the following constraints were present:

  • Each vision system will inspect parts in less than 0.125 seconds

  • Each strip is presented to the camera for image acquisition for a maximum of 0.080 seconds

  • Following image acquisition, the part indexes and the results must be transferred to the machine controller before the index completes 0.045 seconds later.

The processing unit and the PC running the user interface application were networked using EtherNet.  The image processor also communicated with an Allen-Bradley PLC through a ProSoft card located in the PLC rack using EtherNet.

One part of the inspection involved measuring the width of the medical strip and verifying that it was within a specified tolerance.  For this particular application, the tolerance was +/-0.100mm.  This required the capability of the camera to be +/-0.010mm.  Below, an image of the part inspection is shown with the user interface created.
